Statement
I build self-contained worlds of nameable and unnamable objects. My paintings explore the narrative potential of abstraction, creating dialogues between passive and active forms, twisted organic shapes, and hand-rendered geometry. These forms behave as physical objects, catching light, casting shadows, and weaving through surfaces to create both entryways and barriers. At the same time, the space remains ambiguous as overlapping shapes dominate and undermine each other, blurring the line between abstraction and illusionism.
Each painting creates and eventually solves a self-generated problem, and I work responsively until a dominant moment emerges. My process is both intuitive and analytical. I layer thick impasto, transparent glazes, immediate brushstrokes, and slow accumulations of marks eventually finding resolution within the carefully curated chaos. Color is a dominant motivation, with saturated hues shifting between harmony and discord, while patterns blend and compete like reams of fabric piled on a table.
My visual language draws from digital and physical media, combining flat space, drop shadows, and abundance of stimuli with the tactile world of architecture, dog-eared book pages, textiles, and handwritten notes. I borrow from pareidolia, trompe l’oeil still lifes, and cartoons, constructing layered environments that play with perception. Through humor and the suspension of disbelief, I explore the power of suggestion and our innate desire to find order and meaning in what we see.
